Section 1 – Research Questions
Main Primary Question
What are the
main impacts of traffic to the population?
Sub-Questions
1)
What causes traffic in general?
2)
Does traffic has effect on the
environment?
3)
Does traffic has effects on old people?
4)
What are the effective solutions to
traffic congestions?
Section 2 – Background Report Summary
One
of the most serious problems in Abu Dhabi is the heavy traffic. The problem
becomes an irritant to many commuters every day (Zacharias, 2012). Many of the residents are stuck in traffic
and many got late for their appointments and office works (Salama, S, 2012). Sometimes,
commuters are stuck for two hours in the traffic, which result to blow their
heads that eventually affect their works in their workplaces (Traffic
Congestion in Abu Dhabi, 2012). Some traffic problems are in-fact caused by drivers
themselves who are not properly educated on the streets. Also, other causes
might come from the side of commuters as well and other more factors such as
accidents, improper road signs and geographical planning of the stress. Another
reason
why there is the problem of heavy traffic in Abu Dhabi is the fact that prices
of cars and other vehicles are very affordable for the people living in Abu
Dhabi. This caused many cars sold every year in Abu Dhabi. The increase in the
number of trucks and commercial vehicles is the main cause why the traffic
becomes congested especially during office hours (Zacharias, 2012).
However; this
topic implies that drivers who caused traffic will have after effects on their
health and emotions. Simply, the topic reminds our drivers and motorists that
in order that they will not consider traffic congestion a stressor, they have
to discipline their selves on the roads.
Section 3 – Questionnaire Results
Ten
participants responded to the questionnaire about traffic that is self-made by
the researcher. The main primary question asked is, ‘What are the main impacts
of traffic to the population? Based from the background information, traffic
may cause delays in the appointments, in offices and in schools. The literature
somewhat agrees with the findings results
When nearly 90 % of the participants agree that traffic affects the work
schedule and universities while just over 10 % responded that traffic does not
affect work schedule and coming to universities. The first sub-question asked
is, ‘What are the main causes of traffic? Majority of the participants or 7 out
of ten said that traffic is caused by reckless driving, the population of adult
is increasing and more personal transports are used than public transports. Other
causes of traffic stated by respondents are accidents and rush hours. Whether
traffic affects the environment, about 80 % of the participants stated that
traffic affects the environment while 20 % said that traffic does not have an
effect on the environment. On the question if traffic causes damage to
the environment, more than half of the participants stated that traffic does
not cause damage to the atmosphere while less than half of them responded
negatively. Regarding the impact of traffic on old people, 30 % stated that
traffic does not have any effect on them while 70 % responded “yes”.
Section 4 – Discussion
One of the interesting findings of the
research work was about the reasons of traffic. Most respondents blame the
increasing number of old people. This reason was not mentioned in the
background information. Yet, there are anticipated reasons to traffic such as
rush hours, accidents and reckless driving. These were also mentioned by the
respondents. Other interesting results were shown on the answers of respondents
on the impacts of traffic. While the answers for the impact of traffic are
delays in school and in works, the respondents mentioned the impacts or
consequences of traffic to the environment. There were responses that said that
traffic may have effects on the environment such as that carbon emission
increases during traffic and the carbon amount settles and stagnates in one
area causing the high density that eventually increases greenhouse effect. In
this connection, the answer to the main research question on the impact of
traffic to the population is delays in works and in school and at the same time
it has negative effects on the environment as well. With these findings, it is
recommended for the transport authority especially in the city of Abu Dhabi to
find measures how to minimize traffic problem in the city because of its
negative impact to the population and to the environment. As regards the
research topic, I would like if there is time to ask additional information
about the current measures of our government in solving traffic especially in
the city of Abu Dhabi. What are the measures they are doing to discipline the
erring drivers for driving recklessly? Given the chance to conduct the same
research, I would have to determine the countries in the world with the best
traffic solution and recommend UAE to benchmark on their traffic strategies.
